About

Visit Caldicot Castle in its beautiful setting of tranquil gardens and a wooded country park. Founded by the Normans, developed in royal hands as a stronghold in the Middle Ages and restored as a Victorian family home, the castle has a romantic and colourful history. Entry is free (except on certain event days).

Caldicot Castle is now closed for the season, and will reopen to the public on 1st April 2025. The country park remains open all year round, although the main car park will close by 5.30pm each day.

Find out about its past, explore the medieval towers and take in the breath-taking views of the parklands and surrounding area from the battlements. You will be able to travel through time and discover the home of Welsh castle life, from medieval times to the twentieth century. The castle was developed as a fortress by Royal hands in the Middle Ages and restored as a Victorian family home. The River Nedern winds its way through the park, and the wildlife pond is home to a variety of wildfowl.

You can see the 12 pounder muzzle-loading HMS Foudroyant’s cannon in our courtyard. Come and unravel the mysteries of the dark chilling castle dungeon. Caldicot Castle is reputed to be haunted by a number of ghosts. Who will you see before you leave?

The Castle's tower is one of the best places to view the Severn estuary. The castle was built on a spur of sandstone to control the River Nedern flowing nearby. The river was once a tidal estuary navigable for several miles upstream.
