As part of Monmouthshire's Destination Management Plan review, we're reflecting on the ways that sustainable tourism can transform communities – by creating jobs, fostering inclusion and strengthening local economies – and giving our residents, visitors and businesses the opportunity to shape the way Monmouthshire is developed, managed and promoted to visitors in future.
This survey has now closed.
Tourism is vital to Monmouthshire’s economy and generates income to support a wide range of businesses that benefit from spending by visitors. According to figures supplied by tourism economic indicator STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor), the 2.29m visitors to Monmouthshire in 2023 brought in almost £329 million to the local economy and supported the equivalent of 3,462 full-time jobs. Visitor spending also helps keep rural businesses and services viable.
While economic growth is important we need to strike the right balance between economic, environmental and social value if we’re to develop tourism sustainably in Monmouthshire. This means developing a visitor economy that is most beneficial for all, by attracting the right kinds of visitors, in the right numbers, in the right places, and at the right time of year to avoid negatively impacting the environment and / or spoiling the quality of life for people who live in popular tourism destinations in the county. This will ensure that visitors continue to enjoy a positive experience here and that Monmouthshire communities continue to offer a warm welcome.
Management of the destination for visitors is guided by Monmouthshire’s strategic Destination Management Plan. The current Destination Management Plan, approved by Monmouthshire County Council Cabinet in 2018, and overseen by Monmouthshire's Destination Partnership, is currently under review and your input will inform how the county is developed, managed and marketed for tourism in future.
The business, visitor and resident surveys are different lengths and take varying lengths of time to complete. The estimated time taken to complete each survey is as below:
