You are here: Inspire me > Film & TV in Monmouthshire > Rockfield - The Studio on the Farm
Rockfield Farm was originally the property of Lord Llangattock and his family (including Charles Rolls of Rolls-Royce fame). Over the years parts of the estate were sold off including Amberley Court in 1958, which would later become the iconic Rockfield Studios.
50 years ago, brothers Charles & Kingsley Ward, were starting out in the family dairy farming business, but they yearned to make music instead and started up their own band. To avoid having to travel regularly to London to record (this was before the motorways were built!) they created their own studios on the farm, and soon attracted attention from musicians all over the world. Due to its secluded location, musicians would stay at the farmhouse whilst recording, turning Rockfield into the world's first residential recording studio.
Throughout the years famous artists recorded here included Queen (twice, including 'Bohemian Rhapsody' as shown in the recent movie), Rush, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Simple Minds, The Stone Roses, Oasis (during which Noel Gallagher allegedly stole a combine harvester!), Coldplay, the Manic Street Preachers, Suede, Kasabian, The Pixies and many many more.
