Cycling is a Monmouthshire passion. We have two of the long-distance routes on the National Cycle Network starting here in Chepstow: the Celtic Trail (220 miles traversing the southern edge of Wales heading west across the Newport Transporter Bridge), and Lon Las Cymru (185 miles heading north through the Brecon Beacons to Snowdonia).
Monmouthshire is also home to the prestigious Abergavenny Festival of Cycling, which includes on its programme family rides as well as events which provide the opportunity to watch the professional riders make it look easy.
For riders who just want to get out on the road, Monmouthshire is the home of ‘The Tumble’ - a legendary 6 km 10% gradient climb (listed as one of the 100 greatest cycling climbs in Britain), and a host of cycle friendly cafes and accommodation.
For more relaxed cycling experiences, try the new five mile multi-use off-road Greenways route which links Tintern with Chepstow in the lower Wye Valley, running along the disused Wye Valley Railway and through the spectacular 1km Tidenham tunnel. Or Route 49 on the National Cycle Network which follows the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal from Abergavenny to the city of Newport.
