The Rolls of Monmouth Oak has been nominated in the 2022 Woodland Trust Tree of the Year competition, and we think it should win. Based on the Rolls of Monmouth golf course, this mighty tree comes in with a girth of 9.55 metres, and at the sprightly age of 'over 500 years' old.

However, if you do need a little more, here's 6 reasons it should win:
1. As it is on a golfcourse, it has inevitable suffered the indignity of many many golf balls hitting it. This is just fair recompense.
2. With a 9.55 metre girth, it's the second thickest tree in the competition. You need a lot of people to hug this tree.
3. It's over 500 years old, so local star Charles Rolls (of Rolls-Royce fame) likely spent time admiring this tree (it is right outside his childhood home after all).
4. It is an important haven for local wildlife, who nestle in its nooks & crannies. So you're not just voting for a tree, you're voting for a home.
5. The Woodland Trust itself call it 'incredible' & 'magnificent', and they know a thing about trees.
6. It is the only Welsh tree on the list, so if you're Welsh, do it for national pride. If it wins it can represent the UK at the European Tree of the Year competition!
