There was great news for Monmouthshire's green spaces this week as FIVE parks achieved Green Flag status for their excellent facilities and commitment to delivering great quality green spaces. This is one more than last year, with Rogiet Countryside Park joining Caldicot Castle and Country Park, Castle Meadows in Abergavenny, the Old Station Tintern and the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal in achieving the coveted awards.

There were also thirteen sites that received 'Community Awards', one up from last year :

In the south near Caldicot we have Caldicot Community GardenRogiet Wildlife Friendly VillageCrick Woodland and Crick Meadow, Caerwent Meadows and The Cornfield in Portskewett.

In Monmouth we have the Busy Bees Garden.

At Usk there's the Incredible Edible Usk Garden at Monmouthshire County Council's County Hall, plus Goytre Community Garden nearby.

Then up in and near Abergavenny there are Mardy Park & Bailey Park and Laurie Jones Community Orchard.

Congratulations to them all!

Rogiet Countryside Park (first time)

Green Flag Rogiet

Previously part of the wider Gwent Levels wetlands, the park used to be filled with railway sidings. When these were removed, buried seeds were brought to the surface and germinated creating a beautiful wildflower meadow today. These meadows are only cut once a year, to allow the wildlife to enjoy the area as they are meant to.

The park now has free parking and routes around (including a roughly one hour trail you can enjoy).
