About
Newport Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Anglican Diocese of Monmouth which includes the whole county of Monmouthshire, the city of Newport and parts of neighbouring local authority areas. It is the seat of the Bishop of Monmouth, the Right Reverend Cherry Vann. Until 1974, Newport was part of the county of Monmouthshire and the largest town within that county. Thus, in 1921 when the diocese was formed, St Woolos parish church was chosen to be the new Cathedral.
Today, the Cathedral is a vibrant house of prayer and worship, offering an open and inclusive welcome to all and reaching out into the community and diocese. There is a thriving musical tradition, and the cathedral hosts many concerts, exhibitions and events.
The architecture of the cathedral is exceptional. Founded around AD 500, it has many early features most notably a magnificent carved Norman arch, and impressive Nave pillars of the same period. The roof is medieval, as is the Tower which features a damaged statue of Jasper Tudor. There are also modern features such as the John Piper window (1962) and the crucifixion suspended sculpture (2020). Many visitors remark on the simplicity and beauty of the cathedral which renders a deeply peaceful and meditative ambience.
