About
Enjoy a fascinating talk all about The Newport Medieval Ship at Catbrook Memorial Hall.
The Newport Medieval Ship is a fifteenth century merchant vessel unearthed in the heart of Newport in 2002. Work on the Riverfront arts centre was paused while excavations took place, and the timbers have since been undergoing a lengthy conservation process so the ship can be displayed to the public.
It is thought that, whilst in Newport, the cradle supporting the ship in its pill collapsed. The hull was flooded and the majority of the ship was then taken apart, leaving only the lower hull that we have today.
This talk is by Dr Toby Jones, the Curator of the Ship. It will last approx one hour plus time for questions and children are welcome. Doors will open at 7, the talk starts 7.30 and there will be a bar.
Part two will be on 6th April in Newport at noon when we can all visit the ship and get close to the real ancient timbers.
Please book ahead for Part One by emailing Fiona Wilton who will send you details of how to pay and book your space. Adults places £5 and we need a crowd as we will make a donation to the conservation work so bring your friends! Childrens places are free but please book so we have some idea of numbers.
